With the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach now running 24/7 operations, a new problem has occurred. Many of the shipping containers that spent weeks onboard ships waiting to be unloaded are now being dumped in nearby neighborhoods once they’re emptied. Sonia Cervantes lives along Anaheim Street, where UCTI Trucking Company is located. The company’s lot only has a capacity for 65 containers so the additional containers now line up along Anaheim Street in front of some people’s homes. “It’s a bunch of neighbors that are very upset because it’s a non-stop situation,” said Cervantes. “I would have to go in at 6:30 a.m. to go to work. There was a trailer already blocking my driveway so I couldn’t get out. Proposed locations to temporarily house the homeless include parking lots at Dockweiler Beach, Will Rogers State Beach and Fisherman’s Village in Marina del Rey Thousands of people are resisting efforts by local officials to house the homeless in temporary cabins and tents near Los Angeles beaches and parks amid an outcry over soaring crime rates related to some encampments.  Councilman Mike Bonin, who has come under fire from residents in the city’s Venice neighborhood and other communities over the expansion of tent cities, submitted a motion in March to identify potential sites and funding for moving the homeless to “safe camping” areas or into “tiny homes” in parks, property at the Los Angeles International Airport and Los Angeles County-owned parking lots. On Thursday, the City Council Homelessness & Poverty Committee approved a motion to conduct a feasibility study for the projects. On Jan. 25, the state lifted the regional stay-at-home orders, a change that could allow restaurants in many counties to reopen for outdoor dining and other services to resume. A crash involving a Corona police officer on Saturday afternoon led to the arrest of the other driver who took the officer’s patrol vehicle while holding a gun — an incident that was captured on cellphone video by a passerby. It happened around 2 p.m. on the 91 Freeway near the Van Buren exit in Riverside, according to the Corona Police Department. The officer, whose name was not released, was driving west in an unmarked Ford Explorer police vehicle when he collided with another car, authorities said. The back of the SUV was hit, causing the officer to lose control and spin, according to the Police Department. When the official pulled over to the side of the road, the other driver ran towards the officer while holding a gun, authorities said. That’s when the officer opened fire, according to the Police Department. A person inside a passing vehicle managed to record part of the encounter. About 17% of America’s restaurants have already permanently closed this year, with thousands more on the brink according to a new report. The National Restaurant Association is publicly pleading with Congress to pass new stimulus to help the industry that has been damaged by the pandemic. The group said Monday that 10,000 restaurants could close in the next three weeks, in addition to the 110,000 that have already shuttered in 2020. The group released results from a survey of 6,000 restaurant operators, revealing that 87% of full-service restaurants reported an average 36% drop in revenue and 83% expects sales to be “even worse” over the next three months as the virus continues to lash the United States. “In short, the restaurant industry simply cannot wait for relief any longer,” said Sean Kennedy, executive vice president for the group, said in a release. He advocates for a “true compromise” between the competing Democrat and Republican proposals and hopes for a larger stimulus package in 2021 under the incoming Biden administration.
